Chapter Fifteen

Annalise looked down at her watch. Girls’ night started at seven-thirty, and she was this month’s hostess. Her friends knew to expect very little from her nights. A glass of wine and something to do with sports, since she enjoyed watching the local sports teams. Both Cassie and Marie were more girly girls and enjoyed the occasional rom-com. An action movie or even a war flick was more Annalise’s jam.

This time, though, her friends Janelle and Amelia joined the group. Amelia was a police officer in their hometown of Bonney Lake. They had all decided to watch the season opener for the Seattle Mariners. Based on whatever numbers the commentators were looking at, they said that the Mariners had a good chance at the playoffs. How they would know before the season started was completely beyond her. It would take a miracle for the M’s to get a winning season after the All-Star break, which very rarely happened.

“Some little birdie today told me that you are dating someone.” Cassie waggled her eyebrows.

“Where did you hear that? I’m not dating anyone,” Annalise replied.

“Uh-huh. The blush stealing across your face says something different,” Janelle chuckled from the sofa while looking at the bottom of her wine glass.

“Fine. There’s this guy I am working with on the case I’m trying to crack. His aunt went missing about twenty years ago, around the time that your dad was starting his side job as a mad scientist,” Annalise explained. “He wants to solve the case just as much as I do. These new Cross Country Killer cases are starting to show some similarities to some other murders that took place at the same time as his aunt’s disappearance.”

Janelle looked up at her. “What are you trying to tell me?”

Annalise knew how hard all this was for her childhood best friend. Janelle had barely escaped her father a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, Janelle’s two cousins weren’t as lucky. It was a sore subject for her friend, and Annalise would have side-stepped the matter, but the TV flashed.

Breaking News! Birmingham Police have just released information suggesting that the body of the young woman who was reported missing a couple of days ago has been recovered. No other details have been released.

What in the world? She glanced over at the other women as they watched the news bulletin replay the news. Her worst nightmare had come to pass. Another woman, daughter, wife, mother—gone. She couldn’t think past the numbness crashing around her.

Ring, ring, ring!

Thinking it was Ethan, she bypassed her customary glance down at the screen to see who was calling before she answered the phone. “Hello?”

A nasally voice on the other end of the phone replied, “Another woman had to die because you couldn’t figure out the clues. Dig deeper, Annalise Gordon, or another will follow in her footsteps.”

Click!

Annalise sat there, silently staring at her phone. She couldn’t bring herself to look away from it. This was her private number, which couldn’t be traced. Fuck! She needed to get herself and her phone to Crowne.
